I95 Crash Injures Four In St. Johns County

St. Augustine, Fl - A single vehicle crash on I95 in the southbound lanes closed the road on Saturday evening around 8:00 pm when a Ford Explorer rolled over, ejecting three of the four passenger.

While details are still coming in, Fire Service News has learned from multiple sources that a Ford Explorer traveling south on 95 rolled over at least once, coming to rest on it’s wheels facing north. Three of the four passengers riding in the vehicle where ejected in the crash and declared “Trauma Alerts”.

Three helicopters where used to transport the trauma alerts, Trauma One, LifeFlight and ShandCare Gainesville to Jacksonville. The forth victim was transported via ground ambulance to a Jacksonville hospital. It is unclear where all the patients where transported to at this time.

Both sides of 95 where shut down for several minutes while the helicopters where landed on 95 just south of the accident scene. The coordination on the part of the dispatch center and the on scene commanders was nothing short of amazing. Landing the helicopters back to back, in fact TraumaOne and LifeFlight landed withing yards of each other and were on the ground at the same time.

The accident is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol. E4, E16, SQD17, R16, R17, R12, Batt1, and Batt2 all responded from St Johns County Fire Rescue as well as units from St. Johns County Sheriffs office. There were no fire service injuries reported as a result of the incident.

**UPDATED MAY 17th, 2010**

Fire Service News received information from a driver that witnessed this accident.

According to the witness, she was driving north and saw the Ford Explorer traveling south, suddenly turn left into the guardrail. The witness told FSN “..the car rolled over once or maybe twice and three people were ejected from it. The driver stayed in the car. The wife was lying in the road and I saw what I believe to be two small children ejected from the car as well.”

We know from investigators that there were three people ejected from the Explorer and two of those were indeed pediatric patients.

The witness further told us that “..one of the children stood up after being ejected and ran to the woman laying in the road.”

While the images that this information brings to one’s mind are sad or even horrifying, it important information that needs to be brought out. The first question in my mind is why did these children get ejected? And secondly, where they properly restrained?

In any case, this is truly a tragic accident and we wish the best for this family. FSN has not been able to obtain a status on the condition of any of the victims involved in this accident. As soon as we do, we will pass that information on to our readers.
