Vehicle Accident Ignites Woods Fire

A burned out truck sits in the woods off St. Marks Pond Blvd. after it crashed into the trees and started a fire that burned 4 acres.

St. Augustine, FL – What started as a single vehicle accident on the wooded roadside of St. Marks Pond Blvd. Tuesday June 15th, 2010, ended in a fire that burned four acres of brush and started a fire at the landfill across the road.

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac was travelling north along St. Marks Pond Blvd. when it left the road and crashed in the tree. The driver and passenger were able to get out of the car but the car caught the brush around it on fire.

The fire spread to the landfill across the street from the crash.

The vehicle was destroyed by the fire that quickly spread to the woods around it. Engine 16 from St. Johns County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and began to fight the blaze. They were joined by a second engine company and the Florida Division of Forestry a short time later.

Ambers from the main fire spread to the nearby landfill and started a large fire there as well. With six engines, two tenders and a Bat. Chief, St. Johns County Fire Rescue brought the fires under control and turn the scenes over to the Florida DOF and officials from the landfill.
