St. Augustine Girl Killed After Being Struck By Pickup

A dirt bike lays in the road on Wildwood Drive after a Ford pickup struck it, killing the rider.

St. Augustine, FL – An 18 year old Saint Augustine girl, Shea Burchfield, was killed shortly before 3:00pm while riding her 50cc Honda dirt bike along Wildwood Drive when she was struck by a Ford pickup driven by Fredrick Andrews, also of St. Augustine. The accident occurred near the entrance to the Coronado development and closed Wildwood Drive for over an hour.

According to the report from Florida Highway Patrol, the dirt bike was traveling north and crossed into the path of the Ford as it traveled south. The Ford then struck the struck the bike.  When Sheriff’s officers arrived on scene, they found the rider on the side of the road unresponsive and started CPR.

The dirt bike caught fire as a result of the crash and was extinguished with a fire extinguisher. St. Johns County Fire Rescue Engine and Rescue 11 arrived on scene and took over CPR but determined the riders injuries where to grave and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Florida Highway Patrol was called in to investigate the accident scene and the coroner’s office removed the body. The driver of the Ford pickup was not injured as a result of the accident and FHP has not released whether charges will be filed against him at this time. The driver did stop when the accident occurred but was unable to render any aide.

Neighbors milled around the scene, many speaking very highly of the Burchfield, one saying she had just graduated from Pedro Menendez High School this year. He also said, “I just saw her this morning riding around the neighborhood.” He described her as a sweet girl and very pleasant to be around.

FHP opened the road shortly after 4:00pm, restoring traffic flow to Wildwood Drive.
